Group work in second-language learning

Benefits of group work include:

  • greatly increased speaking opportunities
  • a more realistic communication situation
  • lower stress levels
  • greatly increased opportunities to learn: i.e. it is easier to interrupt and ask for repetition or clarification
  • input at a more appropriate level.

Language-learning opportunities are further enhanced when group size is varied. Working in pairs, for example, provides maximum speaking opportunities and minimum stress, while larger groups can stimulate lively discussion, promote creativity, and provide an audience for work that has been developed in pairs.
