Lesson sequence

Before this lesson, cut up each of the three resource sheets (3Q, 3R and 3S) to create sets of cards.

Explain to the students that, in pairs, they are going to ask and answer questions about where they are going and what they are going to do there.

Hand out a copy of the Word list: Place names to each pair.

Tell Partner A in the pair to place one card from either Resource sheet 3Q or Resource sheet 3R in front of Partner B, asking and answering the questions, for example:

Kei te haere koe ki hea? - Where are you going?

Partner B replies:

Kei te haere au ki Tauranga. - I’m going to Tauranga.

Partner A places a card from Resource sheet 3S and asks:

Ki te aha? - What for?

Partner B replies:

Ki te waiata. - To sing.

When both questions have been answered, the students could join the answers together, for example:

Kei te haere au ki Tauranga ki te waiata.

I am going to Tauranga to sing.

Have the students take turns at asking and answering the questions as they work through the different card combinations.

Language to use

  • Place ‘ki’ before place names.
  • Use ‘ki te’ to express ‘in order to’.
  • Present tense marker ‘Kei te’.

Tips

Copy the cards onto different coloured paper and laminate.

Variations

The students could create their own dialogues using the cards.

For extension, introduce either the past or future tense:
I haere koe ki hea? I haere au ki Tauranga.
Where did you go? I went to Tauranga.

Ka haere koe ki hea? Ka haere au ki Tauranga.
Where will you go? I will go to Tauranga.

Other resources

  • This short cartoon models the question Kei te haere koe ki hea?' (Where are you going?) and 'Ki te aha?' (What for?).
